Remote co-working Hackathon between Italy & Spain

creating Internet of Things solutions for Smart Citizens

WHERE

- MuSe, Trento, ITALY (http://www.muse.it)

- Fabra i Coats, Barcelona, SPAIN (http://fabraicoats.bcn.cat)

WHAT

"IoTogether" is a competition event for 7-8 co-located teams in Trento and Barcelona. Remote teams will be composed by participants from both sides who will be asked to interact via Future Internet videoconferencing tool provided by the SPECIFI project.

Cooperatively build "networked projects" on wearables and smart environments:

- Craft your ideas about a better city environment and life

- Work remotely with a team you have never met before
- Use 3D printing, laser cutting and other FabLab tools
- Connect sensors and actuators to the Internet
- Build a connected and interactive project
- Have lots of fun with paid lunch & coffees, learn things, meet new people
- Win Prizes!

WHO

HACKERS, MAKERS, GEEKS and DESIGNERS

interested in Wearables and Smart Environments and willing to work together.

INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING?

REGISTRATION EXTENDED: 15/08/2014 - 18/09/2014 (12pm)

Trento side registration

Barcelona side registration

SAVE THE DATE - Participants will meet for a team-up session the 19th:

- @ the MuSe lobby, 6pm

- @ BDigital , Roc Boronat 117, Floor A @ 6pm. (Visitors should use the elevator at the end of the hall; Contact persons: Joana Simoes & Rafael Giménez)

THINK ABOUT IT AND TAKE WITH YOU
Your LAPTOP  for SW development;
IoT DEVICES and OBJECTS you would like to work with.
Just remember that using FabLab tools for creating or integrating objects will increase your evaluation!

LANGUAGE
Official language is English, free language within teams.

CONTACTS

Trento side: IoTogether-trento@create-net.org

Barcelona side: IoTogether-barcelona@create-net.org

THE 8 PROTOTYPES created during the event:

1.       "SEETY": Seety is a urban garden community that merges gardens around the world. With Seety everyone can share the conditions of their own garden; like: light, temperature and air humidity, rain, and other sensor value. Sensors are situated on a tree with arduino and ethernet shield closed into a wood box providing the connection to the Seety's website.

2.       "LoveTotem" – 2nd Prize!: Suppose you are too far from your sweetheart and you want to know how he/she really feels, or share emotions without talk! Your partner can wear the LoveSensors: when you'll turn on your LoveTotem, you'll see it take strong/hot color when your partner is excited, or soft blue light when relaxed. Love Totem uses an open hardware platform (Arduno Yun) and human sensors like (Muscle sensor, Temperature/Humidity, GSR) to track the state of a person, and transmits these data through a dedicated API to a cloud platform (GlueThings). On the other side, another Love Totem will retrieve these data, representing them with a mix of some coloured leds. Leds are placed in a lamp, which we have designed and made using a laser cutter and a 3d printer.

3.       "WineCheck": The user can check the temperature of a wine bottle using his smartphone: just put the bottle on the top of the 3D printed support and the sensor will send the temperature to your smartphone, additional info about the wine can be accessed by scanning the QRcode printed on the label of the bottle.

4.       "Remote interactive house control": In a far holiday house in Barcelona a spark core platform connected with some temperature and humidity sensors collects the data and sends these to a cloud database (glue.things) every hour. Here in Italy three owners of the holiday house can download the data from the cloud and in the case they're permitted to use the house in Barcelona, they can decide to change the physical values by putting new data on the cloud data base. The spark core in Barcelona reads the new parameters and decides whether to turn on the heating or the air conditioning system. The multi-owner guys were connected in a computer network where Raspberry computers where controlled by a Microtik server and they had special rights to inquire the cloud data base restricted by the period they were allowed to use the house in Barcelona.

5.       "Emotional Bag": The "emotional bag" is a bag having led stripes tailored within its fabric. A galvanic sensor monitors bag user’s "emotional status", changing the bag's colour accordingly. As a proof of the concept, we have implemented a system where the light of three leds (red, green and blue) in Barcelona is altered according to the evolution of the data measured in Trento.

6.       "Smart Glove". A glove that could sense the hearth beat and the level of stress. Through a Lilypad and a Bluetooth shield put on the glove the data could be shared with the smarphone. We think to use this glove during outdoor activities like skitouring and mountaineering because it could be used to call for help in case an accident happens and the glove user faints. To do this we create an app that read a string of data (that contains the measured hearth frequency) and in case the frequency becomes lower than a threshold value automatically sends a message of help containing the GPS position.

7.       "BluePresence" - 1st Prize! SmartCities start from SmartHomes, and our project BluePresence lets appliances be aware of people around them using the digital trails left by their bluetooh enabled devices (smapthones, smartwatches, etc). Knowing when a person is around a smart light source can automatically turn it on. This digital brain pairs with a green heart, that turns the light (or any other appliance) off when the person leaves the house. During the hackathon we developed the presence sensing features on a RaspberryPI equipped with a Bluetooth dongle, and designed a couple of prototypes of wearable bracelets with a battery powered Bluetooth module: when the module was near the sensing device, a (3D printed) lamp was turned on; the light turned off when the person (and his Bluetooth device) was sensed as leaving the monitored space. Every event was sent to an online database, that the Barcelona team analyzed to detect the use of the appliances: drilling down more on this data can reveal use by each person, and a power consumption profile can be created. This leaves room for very interesting future uses: like gamification to enable acquisition of responsible energy consumption habits, or the possibility to split bill with roommates according to real energy usage.

8.       Car Finder". Car Finder is a little box to put in the car and it saves the GPS data into the cloud. We also made an app for mobile phones with a map that shows where you are and the location of your cars. It is useful for (1) car-sharing and (2) if someone stole your car.
